One of the best things about biking in the city is coming upon a stretch of side-street of great charm that you would never see from the main streets. One such block is 71st Terrace between Cherry and Holmes.
Nearly all the houses are of the Tudor style, which proliferated in Kansas City neighborhoods due to Napoleon W. Dible, who built more than 5,000 such homes here beginning in 1904.
The Dible Tudors in the 400 block of East 71st Street are well maintained and retain their original appearance–that is, they haven’t been afflicted by the current trend of painting stone and brick houses black and white.
Neither has the street’s scale been destroyed by tear-downs and outsized rebuilds (looking at you, Prairie Village!). The street’s houses are harmonious, varied, and rhythmic. For all these things, this block has earned our Block of the Month for March 2025.
