Route G: Benton

Benton Boulevard has to be one of the oddest streets in Kansas City. It runs from Gladstone Boulevard in the Northeast south to Linwood jogging east and west several times, splits into Benton and South Benton south of Linwood. Benton terminates at Brush Creek, but South Benton continues–disappearing and reappearing–all the way to 81st Street, where it finally gives up the ghost. It’s an odd way to honor Thomas Hart Benton.

However, stretches of Benton north of Brush Creek are key components to a great east-side route into Downtown.

Starting at the main Swope Park entrance, the Benton uses Swope Parkway until it reaches Brush Creek. That wide boulevard carries light auto traffic and works well for e-bikers.

Crossing Brush Creek the route continues on Benton Boulevard all the way to 18th Street. Benton was recently repaved, converting the ride from jarring to smooth, and the boulevard is peaceful and tree-lined–a very pleasant route.

It jogs west at Linwood and again at 22nd Street. Turn left on 18th Street and use the protected lanes to reach Walnut Street, and then north on Walnut through the Crossroads and into Downtown.
